Rods for trolling: strong, powerful and short from 1.80 m to 2.80 m

Trolling is a technique widely used from the boat but also from shore. The concept, in this fishing technique, is to give the bait the right movement so that it can look, to the fish, like some kind of animal. Depending on the type of boat and equipment, trolling is divided into small, medium and large.

The first type is the least demanding and requires a boat that is not large, simple. It does not need to be equipped with a motor, and in any case one with a few horsepower that allows for a non-irregular gait is sufficient.

Small troll fishing is carried out inshore, within a radius of no more than three miles. The technique can be practiced with a simple "hand line" or with one or more rods, which are attached to the sides of the boat by means of special, solid rod holders. The rod may be fixed or casting, with a fixed reel. Line never less than 0.20. Natural or artificial bait. Species that can be fished by this method are walleye, murres, bass, perch, garfish, sciarrani, turbot, tracine, grouper and snapper.

The second type, medium trolling; is a much more challenging fishery and is fished from three to six miles from the coast. It requires more expensive equipment and an adequate boat given also the current nautical regulations. Therefore, a solid experience with discrete notions of seamanship must be put into account.

The same equipment normally used for small trolling can be used, but experts prefer specific "rigging," with more sophisticated and therefore really expensive gear. Equipment however sturdy, quality rod, star type spinning reel, the most suitable for its braking action. Line from a minimum of 0.40 to a maximum of 0.80, with steel terminal; burnished or brass swivels. Accessories include the raffi, necessary for harpooning the fish, which may be very large.

Equally useful is the special leather belt to support a rod, indispensable when retrieving large fish. The species that can be caught with this technique are mackerel, but unforeseen encounters can be made for which it is good to be pre-arranged.

Big trolling is really reserved for specialists with large boats and important equipment. So it is not much worth dwelling on it. Those who know and want to tackle small and medium trolling will have already found.... bread for their teeth.
